From Subterranean to Serene: An Elevated Maple Grove Basement Bathroom Transformation

Basement bathrooms often suffer from a reputation for being dark, cramped, or purely functional spaces tucked away from the main living areas.

When our clients in Maple Grove, MN, approached us, their challenge was clear: they needed a new bathroom that served the lower level but demanded a design that felt every bit as bright, sophisticated, and custom as a main-floor retreat.

Our mandate was to transform this previously underutilized space into a highly functional area that balances contemporary elegance with practical, elevated style. The result is a stunning remodel that proves a basement bathroom can, in fact, be a source of beauty and high-end living space.

Bringing Light and Warmth Below Grade

To ensure the bathroom felt airy and welcoming, we focused on materials that maximize light and introduce a sense of natural warmth.

The design begins with a perfect balance of cool tones and organic elements:

  • Natural Wood Vanity: We selected a white oak vanity with a crisp white countertop. This natural wood element is crucial for introducing warmth and grounding the space, preventing the subterranean location from feeling cold.

  • Clean Palette: A refreshing light blue palette was incorporated through the tile choice, complemented by clean, light grey tiling in the shower, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.

The Unexpected Tile Strategy: Accent on the Wall

The most unique design decision in this project centered around the tile placement, which was carefully chosen to enhance the perception of space and maximize visual impact.

We deliberately placed the beautiful, patterned light blue accent tile—a unique trapezoid/diamond pattern—on the main vanity wall instead of inside the shower. This choice has several distinct benefits:

  1. High-Impact Focal Point: The accent tile is immediately visible upon entering the room, making it the undeniable focal point and showcasing its beautiful texture.

  2. Visual Expansion: In the shower, we opted for large-format, light grey rectangular tiles that match the floor area. Using a large format tile in a small, glass-enclosed shower minimizes grout lines, which tricks the eye and helps the space feel significantly bigger and cleaner.

  3. Modern Elegance: The sleek, glass-enclosed shower maintains the modern aesthetic while adding visual interest and functionality.

When you open the door of this Maple Grove bathroom, the first thing you see is the beautiful accent tile. We intentionally placed this unique light blue trapezoid tile on the main wall to create an immediate, stunning focal point that instantly elevates the space above standard basement design. Flanked by the clean lines of the natural wood vanity and the expansive, mirrored medicine cabinets, this view perfectly showcases how strategic tile placement and smart storage maximize both style and function.

Maximizing Every Square Foot with Smart Storage

In smaller or secondary bathrooms, smart storage is non-negotiable. We needed to ensure every essential item had a discreet home without sacrificing the clean, contemporary aesthetic. Our solution was to implement mirrored medicine cabinets that span the area above the sink and toilet.

To manage the budget effectively while achieving a high-end look, the base of the natural wood vanity and the mirrored medicine cabinets were smartly sourced from IKEA. This allowed us to invest more heavily in custom finishes like the accent tile and professional installation, proving that professional design can elevate accessible materials into a truly custom look.

This Maple Grove project is a true testament to how thoughtful, intentional design can elevate any space in your home, no matter its location. We are passionate about turning design challenges into stunning solutions that perfectly suit our clients' needs.

The shower features large format tile to make the space feel bigger, which contrasts beautifully with the main vanity wall. We deliberately placed the light blue accent tile behind the sink and toilet to maximize its visual impact, turning the vanity area into the bathroom's main focal point. The choice to use a simple, large format tile in the shower area minimizes grout lines, which is key to making the compact space feel expansive and clean.
